Scotty was born in 1964. When he was 3 months old, we learned that he had hydrocephalus and were told that he would die without an operation to reduce the fluid on his brain. So, at the age of 4 months, the surgeries began. In all, Scotty has had 18 major surgeries in his lifetime. The constant surgeries to relieve swelling to his brain left Scotty completely blind in both eyes by age 11. As a result of a stroke the following year, Scotty was left in a wheelchair with mild mental retardation on top of his blindness. |

Scotty has been participating in UPARC’s workshop training programs since 1987. In 1987 this wonderful organization had been operating group homes for only 10 years, but we knew immediately that no other program would be right for Scotty. We waited 11 years for an opening in a UPARC group home and finally our prayers were answered. |

Scotty now lives in a group home specially designed for people with developmental disabilities and severe medical issues. Many of these people are aging and have dementia. Each of these individuals receives loving care, much the same as we would provide in our own home if we were physically able. Without UPARC, we just don’t know how we would be able to handle the daily care that Scotty requires. We have absolute confidence and implicit trust in the UPARC staff and leadership. We invite everyone to visit UPARC and see firsthand the fine work that is being done here every day. We ask for your support so that Scotty can continue to have the life-style that maintains the dignity that he deserves. |
